These Canadian entrepreneurs, athletes and artists range from merely wealthy to ultra-high-net-worth. Most have made their fortunes through talent and hard work, though some have likely benefited from having well-to-do families.

1. Garrett Camp, co-founder of Uber, StumbleUpon

Mr. Camp, 39, co-founded a Web-discovery engine called StumbleUpon at the right time; he sold it to eBay in 2007 for US$75-million. In 2009 the Calgary native co-founded Uber, again displaying a knack for anticipating consumers' needs. Customers in 100 cities around the world have used the ride-sharing app to take five billion rides, and the San Francisco-based company has introduced Uber Eats, offering on-demand food. He is listed by Forbes magazine as the eighth-richest Canadian with an estimated net worth of US$4.8-billion.

2. Lilly Singh, YouTube star

Ms. Singh, known as IISuperwomanII to her 14 million YouTube followers, created her first videos in her parents’ house in the Scarborough neighbourhood of Toronto after graduating from university. She has since turned her unique brand of comedy, acting and entertainment into a lucrative business, selling out stadiums and penning a New York Times best-selling book, How to be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life. Now based in Los Angeles, the 29-year-old earned a reported US$10.5-million last year for her YouTube channel, which is primarily targeted at girls and young women aged 15 to 24.

3. Ronnen Harary, co-founder and co-chief executive of toy maker Spin Master Corp.

Mr. Harary has turned play time into big business. He and Spin Master co-founder Anton Rabie are known for creating the Hatchimals and Paw Patrol toys that kids ask Santa for (and parents scramble to find). The two friends started the company in 1994 with a $10,000 investment and one product; now they employ 1,500 people worldwide. Forbes once estimated the Torontonian’s net worth to be US$1.3-billion.

4. Mike Comrie, retired hockey player

Mr. Comrie played hockey for six NHL franchises, including his hometown team, the Edmonton Oilers, before retiring at 31 after repeated surgeries on his hip. He is divorced from actress Hilary Duff, with whom he has one child. Mr. Comrie made millions as an athlete, and he’s also the son of Bill Comrie, co-founder of the furniture chain The Brick, which was sold for $700-million in 2012.

5. Brooke Henderson, pro golfer

Ms. Henderson has been golfing for 17 of her 20 years, four of them as a professional on the LPGA Tour. She has an impressive list of amateur and pro tournament wins under her belt, including the 2018 CP Canadian Women's Open, her seventh LPGA tournament. The native of Smiths Falls, Ont., also competed for Canada in the 2016 Rio Olympics, tying for seventh place. She has an estimated net worth of $4-million and a multiyear endorsement deal with Golf Town and other sponsors, as well as US$4.2-million in career earnings.

6. Lance Stroll, Formula One driver

At 19, Montreal native Mr. Stroll is already a seasoned driver, having started in kart racing at 10. He rose through the ranks, joining the Williams Young Driver Development Programme in 2015. He was named the team’s driver two years later. So far, his top Formula One finish has been third place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last year, making him the youngest rookie to take the podium. Racing is a notoriously expensive sport, so having billionaire Lawrence Stroll as his father has likely helped keep the teen on the track.

7. Brett Wilson, co-founder of FirstEnergy Capital Corp., former ‘Dragons' Den' panellist, Member of the Order of Canada

As the capitalist-with-a-heart panellist on Dragons’ Den, Mr. Wilson invested in 30 businesses before leaving the CBC show after three seasons. He has faced adversity in his personal life, undergoing treatment for work addiction and two successful battles with prostate cancer. Single and healthy now at 61, the Saskatchewan native is divorced with three adult children; he was once romantically linked to singer Sarah McLachlan.

8. The Weeknd, singer

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, known by his stage name The Weeknd, is a 28-year-old Toronto-born singer, songwriter and producer who now calls California home. He has earned Grammy and Juno awards for his work, has been featured in a Marvel comic book and has a clothing line. Forbes has estimated his net worth at US$92-million. He has been linked romantically to model Bella Hadid and singer Selena Gomez, who herself was once paired with Canadian singer Justin Bieber, but it seems that for now, The Weeknd is single.

9. Louis-Victor Jadavji, co-founder of Wiivv Wearables Inc.

Mr. Jadavji dropped out of college to start Wiivv with co-founder Shamil Hargovan in 2014 with US$10-million in venture capital and a Kickstarter campaign. Wiivv, Mr. Jadavji’s third company, makes custom insoles using 3-D printing technology based on photos taken by customers with a smartphone app. Both men were on Forbes’ 30 under 30 list in 2016. Originally from Quebec, Mr. Jadavji now lives in Vancouver.

10. Tessa Virtue, figure skater

Ms. Virtue has been skating with her pairs partner Scott Moir since she was seven years old. They have represented Canada at three Olympics and are among the most decorated figure skaters in the history of the Games. Referred to as "fiercely private,” the 29-year-old from London, Ont., has famously denied speculation that she and Mr. Moir are a romantic couple. Among her sponsors are Adidas, Nivea and Visa, and various sources on the Web peg her net worth at around US$2-million.

11. Joshua Jackson, actor

Best known for his role as Pacey on the television drama Dawson’s Creek, which ended in 2003, the 40-year-old Vancouver-born actor has been working steadily since; he also had a starring role on the television sci-fi drama Fringe. He dated actor Diane Kruger for 10 years, but the couple split in 2016. Earlier this year he appeared on Broadway in Children of a Lesser God.

12. Drake, singer and rapper

How could we not mention Drake? One of the most famous entertainers in the world, the rapper, producer and actor started his career on the hit television show Degrassi: The Next Generation. He has been linked romantically to a long list of celebrities including Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, and he became a father in 2017 with Sophie Brussaux, a French artist. He has famously given his hometown, Toronto, its latest nickname, “The Six,” and he has homes in that city and in California. His net worth is estimated to be US$100-million.
